Eating and Drinking The Day of Surgery
The fasting period before surgery must be followed:
- Stop eating all food 6 hours before your procedure.
- Stop drinking all liquids 2 hours before your procedure.
- Your doctor will tell you to take some of your regular medications with a small sip of water during your fasting time.
- Discuss your medications with your doctor and/or anesthesia provider.
*Please note: For safety reasons, any patient not following the eating and drinking guideline will have their procedure rescheduled.
The objective is to empty the stomach so the risk of inhaling stomach contents into the lungs is reduced.
