Eating and Drinking Guidelines

Fasting guidelines apply to patients having anesthesia.

Properly preparing for you upcoming surgery is vitally important to your health and safety while in our care. The following eating and drinking guidelines are provided to help you understand how to prepare for your surgery as well as clearly understand what your food options are.

UP TO 8 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE
You may eat a normal diet up to 8 hours prior to your procedure.

UP TO 6 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE (8oz or less)
You must limit the amount to 8oz or less. Overindulgence in this area WILL result in rescheduling of your procedure.

Light Snacks ALLOWED: (choose one)

  • Toast (NO Butter)
  • Dry cereal
  • 1/2 Dry Bagel
  • Jam/Jelly
  • Crackers
  • Rice cake
  • Apple/Apple Sauce
  • Carrots/Lettuce

Light Snack NOT Allowed:

  • Nuts (peanuts, almonds, ect)
  • Eggs
  • Any fried foods
  • Protein (includes milk, cheese, meats)
  • High fat foods
  • Bacon
  • Potato/Corn chips
  • Granola/protein/energy bars

UP TO 2 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE (8oz or less)

Liquids ALLOWED: (choose one)

  • Water
  • Coffee (black only, no creamer)
  • Vitamin water
  • Clear juice (cranberry, apple, juices with NO pulp)
  • Jell-o
  • Carbohydrate drinks (ie Gatorade)
  • Clear broth (free of meat pieces)
  • Soda

Liquids NOT ALLOWED:

  • Milk (dairy, soy, almond, coconut, etc)
  • Tomato juice
  • Coffee with milk, cream or non-dairy creamer
  • Protein drinks
  • Orange juice or juice with pulp

Diabetics
You may need longer NPO time. Slower stomach emptying is present in over 50% of patients with longstanding Type I and II diabetes.
